Internships and Work Experience

At the American Red Cross, I was a Disaster Action Team intern. This position allowed me to provide immediate assistance to people who have been directly affected by a disaster such as flooding, fires and trees falling into their house. I learned the importance of ensuring that our clients were calm and giving them hope. I also learned how to properly allocate money, conduct interviews and come up with trainings to ensure that volunteers were able to feel confident in their abilities to provide assistance.

During my internship I was able to work with individuals from all around the world on different projects. I learned how the United States worked with military officials to dispel rumours about the actions of America and the military. I was able to conduct research on Boko Haram and how people are recruited into the organization.

These experiences helped me become more open minded and organized. I learned how to take my ideas and transform them into events and work with different organizations.

At the O'connell Center, I worked as a student employee and had a range of different jobs. I was responsible for hosting events, ensuring that patrons were as comfortable as possible and provided assistance if they needed anything. I also worked in breaking down and setting up events. I worked as security. This wide range of tasks allowed me to improve my 'firmness'. No means no, and I learned how to stand up for myself despite how upset people were getting. I also learned how to work with other people and provide proper directions for them to ensure that tasks were completed properly.
